Walk: St. Davids Head Loop

Summary

A scenic walk taking in ancient sites, Wales' most westerly point, panoramic views, occasionally a view over the Irish Sea to the Wicklow Mountains. With a wide free to roam area there are plenty of options to make this walk your own and make a quick return to the car park if needs be. 


Detail

This walk starts at Whitesands Beach Car Park. Follow the path north out of the car park. On the seaward side you will see a small sand dune under which is St. Patricks Chapel and Cemetery dating back to 600AD. 


Continue up the path and enjoy a short walk past the picturesque Porth Lleuog and wild ponies of Porthmelgan Head takes you to a the beautiful cove of Porthmelgan with uninterrupted views out to the Irish Sea. 


After an essential stop on the beach for a swim or snack return to the path and head out along St. Davids Head where you get your first view down Ramsey Sound. The headland is free to roam and worth spending some time taking in the iron age fortifications and shepherds cave which can be found on the westerly tip and an exhilarating scramble takes you to the very edge of Wales where the Irish Sea first makes landfall. 


The walk along the northern edge of St. Davids Head is wild and rugged with beautiful colours of heather and wild flowers stretching as far as the eye can see. Half way along you will find the remains of an ancient burial chamber dating back to 4000BC. 


Continuing on to the end of the headland brings you to the steep cliffs of Gesailfawr where you in the pupping season (August - November) you will often sees seals taking refuge on the shingle beach below. 


A walk back down the valley takes you back toward Porthmelgan where you can either return to the start point at Whitesands Beach or branch off and take the path up Cairn Llidi where you will be greeted with 360° views of St. Davids Peninsula, Ramsey Sound and the many islands and rocky outcrops. From the top of the hill follow the path and then road back down to Whitesands Car Park.
