The WaterAid Challenge

The first bank holiday weekend in May saw the return of Wessex Water’s annual ‘Business4Life’ participants. The twelve chosen applicants; six employees of Wessex Water and six selected from their suppliers, arrived in St Davids at the beginning of their twelve month staff development scheme.

Alongside completing management development modules, staff are tasked with the challenge of raising this year’s target of £40,000 to donate to WaterAid. With last year’s team raising in excess of £52,000 the group has a solid benchmark. An international NGO, WaterAid’s mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water alongside improved hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. Over 500,000 children die every year from diarrhoea as a result of unsafe water and poor sanitation, which highlights the importance of both raising funds and awareness of WaterAid’s work. As one of our charity partners, we have supported this project for over a decade.

Head of Adventure, Jon Haylock, started the weekend off with a motivational afternoon looking at goal setting. Jon encouraged participants to look at their own inspiration for applying for the programme, before challenging their own creative barriers. Drawing on his own personal goals, Jon’s open and honest account provided the group with a very real experience to relate to. The following day the group had the opportunity to develop their team working skills in a specially tailored coasteering session on the Pembrokeshire Coast. Strong team work and communication were essential, as the group supported each other through choppy waters. That afternoon a series of team building activities, on dry land this time, drew the weekend to a close.

Steve Arthur, Strategic Planning Manager for Wessex Water, said of the programme: “the input from TYF at the start of our year has been shown to provide the best possible start and ensures the team can hit the ground running. The insight from rich experiences, coupled with a uniquely holistic approach to self development and sustainable behaviours emanating from each TYF trainer, is infectious and incredibly motivating for all involved.”
