The company was founded in 1938 as Immanuel Maier GmbH; in 1970, Gerhard Maier took over management. He quickly turned his father's textile company into a clothing manufacturer known throughout the industry for the trending sports of that time: skiing and tennis. Outdoor was added later. Nowadays, you can’t imagine the skiing and outdoor industry without Maier Sports. It has been known as the pants and fitting specialist for many years.

According to the World Bank, 20% of water pollution globally is caused by textile processing. Much of this from chemicals such as PFCs. That is why Maier believe that functionality on its own is not enough. Sustainable production and social responsibility are no longer secondary considerations. Maier have commited to protecting nature as part of their business wide approach to sustainability. The Mission Clean is focused on the ambitious objective of eliminating polyfluorinated and perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) from the textile production process. 

In 2014 they hit their first milestone and launched a PFC-free functional waterproof jacket that did not require the regular post purchase waterproofing treatment traditionally associated with prolonging the lifespan of coats. In 2018 all their stretch outdoor trousers became completely free further demonstrating the commitment that Maier take to developing and manufacturing environmentally sustainable products.
