If you’re a complete beginner, or would like to learn correct technique, then try our dedicated Intro weekends for sea kayaking, surfing and climbing.

If you have some experience and would like to break through a plateau or accelerate your development then try our Improver weekends!

If you fancy trying a range of activities on offer, you can come on our No Limits or Spirit of Adventure multi activity weekends.

The calendar has our fixed-date courses, but don’t let that limit your options; any short break is available, all year round for groups of 4 or more people.

+Rock Climbing - Fundamentals

A two day learning to climb course with TYF Adventure will allow you to get to grips, quite literally with the beautiful sea cliffs of north Pembrokeshire. Your guide, who will be SPA trained will take you through all of the steps necessary to get you climbing on sites such as Porthclais, Porth-y-Ffynnon and St Davids head.

If you are new to the sport or have clocked up a few hours on a climbing wall or crag then this course will help to put you on the right road to learning the basics of safety and technique and allow you to make the most of rock climbing.

No prior experience required

Lunch can be provided by TYF with thanks to Food and Wine for £5 a head, including a filled baguette, crisps, fruit, a drink and a chocolate bar. Just let us know if you would like to order lunch when you book.

By the end of the weekend you should have completed lots of classic Pembrokeshire sea cliff climbs and learnt:

• Moving efficiently over the rock through bouldering practice and coaching
• Securing your own safety kit
• The principles of anchoring the climbing rope
• How to belay safely
• A variety of rock climbs
• How to abseil safely
• Confidently choosing the right grade of climb
• Proficiency in deciphering the guide book descriptions

+Rock Climbing - Improver

This week-end course is for climbers who feel the need for a bit of extra advice, skill or encouragement to take the next steps in their climbing career. The course contents can be flexible to help you meet your goals and may include: training techniques, sea cliff safety, rescue skills.

Previous experience:- Must be a proficient second and have an understanding of the principles of leading

• Single and multi pitch climbing
• Modern ropework
• Double rope technique
• Dynamics of belaying and fall factors

• Abseiling in retreat with self protection.

• Use of walls and how to train for climbing
• Judgement, route choice and route finding

+Kayaking Fundamentals Weekend

Our two day, learn to kayak course in the UK’s only Coastal National Park is aimed at those who have never been in a kayak before or who have kayaked a hand full of times but never had any formal instruction.

During the course you will spend plenty of time on the water with the backdrop of the stunning North Pembrokeshire coastline providing the inspiration to improve your skills, to enable you to explore further and enjoy more spectacular scenery and wildlife.  You will get to experience a range of kayaking craft from, sit on tops, general purpose kayaks to expedition sea kayaks.

The days paddling will head out from wherever the conditions suit best, the emphasis of the trip and the nature of each day will depend entirely on what the group wants to achieve.  Our guides are experienced, qualified and passionate paddlers, who have paddled all over the globe, they will endeavor to provide an experience to remember that is tailored to your needs.  These courses are run in small groups with a maximum of 6 people to one guide, to allow you to gain the most from the course.

What will you cover?

We don’t operate around a set format for these weekends, as the whole aim is to tailor make an experience for you that will give you a taste of the wonderfully diverse world of kayaking, however we typically cover the following areas.

Fundamental kayaking strokes , to make life easier for yourself and prevent injury, learn those fundamentals properly.

Efficient forward paddling , it is the most important part of paddling, so we best get it right from the beginning!

Journeying and Planning a coastal trip , start to move towards being able to plan you own adventures on the coast.

Safety principles of kayaking , learn to manage yourself safely in this wonderful environment,
and learn what to do if you take a dunk in the drink.

+Explore Sea Kayaking Weekend

This is a 2-day course for  those who have a small amount of kayaking experience who want to progress and experience the limitless world of Sea Kayaking.  This is the perfect progression from our kayaking fundamentals weekend.

Using a variety of stunning locations around the St Davids peninsular, our experienced guides will give you an opportunity to gain knowledge of coastal waters and the kayak handling skills specific to this inspiring, dynamic coastal environment.  They will endeavor to provide an experience to remember that is tailored to your needs, by taking in to account your previous experience & the prevailing sea conditions.  These courses are run in small groups with a maximum of 6 people to one guide, to allow you to gain the most from the course.
As well as learning a plethora of exciting new skills, there will still be plenty of opportunity to take a step back, relax and enjoy the beautiful Pembrokeshire national park.

What will you cover?

The skills specific to Sea kayak handling , yes sea kayaks are long, but with a little practice and a few handy hints we will have you maneuvering with ease in no time.

Tidal planning and navigation , in easily digestible bite sized chunks we will demystify the dark art of  planning a trip in a coastal environment.

Rescue skills , it is surprisingly easy to get yourself  back in a sea kayak.  Find out how before it happens for real!

Understanding weather forecasts , learn straight forward ways to interpret the boggling array of weather information available.

Selecting a kayak for you ,  we will point you in the direction of the right kayak for you to ensure you continue to improve those new found skills.

+Weekend Surf Adventure

We’ve teamed up with our good friends at Surfers Against Sewage to bring you a weekend of surfing adventures.

Once you arrive we’ll run through the weekends itinerary and discuss the best surf options. The whole weekend is organised around the best surf and tides so flexibility is a must. We’ll relax for the rest of the evening, pop a surf film on the projector and enjoy a glass of wine.

Our first full day will begin with a surf lesson at one of the stunning local beaches, we’ll search for the best waves and teach you the most important aspects of the surf world from the roots of surfing to surfboard and wetsuit design, surf prediction and surf safety. We’ll teach you how to paddle, how to negotiate the surf when making your way out back, how to prone ride in control of your board and finally the art of standing up and catching your first wave.

After lunch there’ll be a presentation about the fantastic work Surfers Against Sewage do in protecting our oceans and beaches from sewage, marine litter and toxic chemicals, followed by an organised beach clean at one of our local beaches or bays. We’ll get back in the water before the sun goes down and then head back for a BBQ, fire and beers, we’ll chat about the day and share stories into the wee small hours.

Sunday morning is the perfect opportunity to freshen up, take everything you learnt from Saturday and work on that perfect pop up, nail that paddling stroke Your guide will be there to work on your technique and help you find the wave of the day!

We’ll have a tasty organic lunch at TYF HQ, discuss everything we have learnt and help you decide what you can do next to improve your surfing skills. You’ll leave with aching arms, salty faces and some amazing pictures to show all your mates when you get back to work on Monday morning.

Each weekend will cover:

• Handling & paddling a surf board safely & correctly
• The ability to identify and pick suitable waves
• Ride a wave; prone and standing up (to some extent!)
• Make simple turns; prone and standing up
• Predict waves & surf using weather charts & forecasts
• Understanding of common beach/ water hazards and how to treat them
• Knowledge of equipment and how to choose what is best for you
• Knowledge of good surfing locations close to you, or around the world

Our two day course is designed to take surfers to their next level of performance.

Having an experienced set of eyes watch your performance and give expert feedback and coaching, doesn’t happen much when you’re in the surf just for fun.

These Improver Weekends are highly customised and the main aim of our BSA qualified guides will be to find out your goals and aspirations and help you achieve them as quickly as possible.

If you’ve reached a plateau or would like to accelerate your development, this is the ideal weekend for you.

+Longboard Coaching Weekend

Longboard Coaching Weekend 2012

Hosted by TYF Adventure guide and 2 x European Longboard champion Elliot Dudley, this 2-day course promises to be something special for those wanting to improve their longboarding skills at one of Pembrokeshire’s stunning blue flag beaches.

The course is ideal for surfers looking to improve the longboard technique, learn how to cross-step, the art of riding the nose and how to maximise speed and complete those cutbacks.

As keen surfers you’ll know we cant always guarantee surf so the weekend will be as flexible as possible, making the most of the waves and tides.

We would suggest;

Arrive on Friday, unpack and settle into your TYF bell tent (or your chosen accommodation) on the edge of the stunning Pembrokeshire coastal national park.

Saturday
7.00am – 10.00am – Dawn patrol.
10am-11am – Big breakfast
11am-12.30pm – Review of the mornings surf session, in depth look and dry land practice of specific longboard techniques.
12.30 – 13.30pm – Lunch at the beach if the surfs up and the weathers good.
13.30pm – 15.00pm – Catch the incoming tide and surf with video coaching.
15.00pm – 16.00pm – Grab a cuppa, review video footage, set goals for Sundays surf.
Evening BBQ and beers

Sunday
8am – 11am – Reminder of goals over breakfast and coffee, head to the beach for a morning surf with more video coaching.
11am-12.30pm – Look at specific longboard designs and
12.30pm-13.30pm – lunch
13.30pm-14.30pm – Develop a winter training schedule specific to surfing.
14.30pm – 16.00 – free surf with Elliot.
16.00pm – Head home tired and stoked.

The number of people has kept small on the coaching weekend to enable Elliot to really build on your surfing.
