While almost everyone else here at TYF was being inspired at the amazing Do Lectures on the weekend, I was back in my home town of Abergavenny for Wales’ best Food Festival working my way through some of tastiest food from everywhere.
The festival is really all about proper food and connecting to everyone on the food supply chain from farmer to chef. One of the highlights was the Rude Health Rants where the growers, chefs, critics and anyone with a passion for food has a rant about what ‘bugs’ them, no holds barred.
Food journalist Chris Hirst lampooned all the TV food programmes because ‘none of them are actually about food at all’ and any programme that can make someone cry from cooking has to be taking it all too serious.
My favourite ranter was definitely Cyrus Todiwala from Cafe Spice Namaste who after hearing that everything was the restaurants fault, hit back with by having a go at the western concept of curry and pronouncing to a Welsh audience that we should be eating mutton not lamb.
There was also a good rant by Richard Arnold from Calon Wen about proper milk and the problems with the miles it travels. Most of it has to travel a hefty distance to get bottled in Droitwich to then come back to Wales simply because there are no Welsh bottling facilities. With so many problems with our food system it was nice to be in a place where there was so much good proper food. Have a listen to our friend Roger Kerr from Calon Wen having a rant about milk, good stuff….
