This is a day with a difference that will leave the group with lifetime memories of the conversations, the place and the purpose of your get together. Island Odyssey is an exclusive, limited availability day that TYF have designed with RSPB that takes place on the land and coastline of Ramsey Island, off the coast of St.Davids. The Odyssey combines half a day of business work in the island classroom or action learning research with the island’s warden and an unforgettable kayak journey through the caves, arches and secret coves of Ramsey’s most sheltered coast. You can pick the level of adventure that suits your group for a fully tailored, powerful experience that can lift and focus the performance of any team or group.
As with all of TYF’s corporate services, it’s your business needs that shape the objectives and goals for the day. A September Island Odyssey was designed for the leadership team of tech company VMware who wanted to refresh the team with a day out that was adventurous and memorable, yet within the reach and desire of the whole team.
With the option of weaving the Island Odyssey into a longer programme, and it’s power as a stand-alone group, TYF will design the event around the group’s needs, and we can arrange accommodation in anything from 5* glamping to a 5* medieval hotel, or anything in between. The day itself starts with a short ferry crossing to Ramsey from the lifeboat station near St.Davids, before a welcome and refreshments with the RSPB Wardens, leading in to either a work focused seminar or action learning, depending on the design choices you’ve made. A light lunch of local ingredients leads into the briefing for the ocean part of the Odyssey and kitting up for time on the water. TYF’s experienced adventure guides will help the group explore some of the country’s most magical sea caves and beaches at their own pace, keeping a sharp eye out for porpoise, seals, seabirds and maybe, a glimpse of the island’s herd of red deer. The 15-minute ferry ride back to the mainland can lead to the pub and food, or your journey home. 10% of the fees for the Island Odyssey is donated to the RSPB to directly fund their important work on the island.
There are few more potent crucibles for good conversation and open discussion than when a team has shared new and powerful experiences in a stunning natural environment – and the Island Odyssey has these in abundance. We hope that in addition to achieving all of the business outcomes, the team will finish the day with a deeper sense of wellbeing and connection to nature, each other, and the important things in life.
“the team are gushing in their praise of everything we did so thank you for making it special” David Parry-Jones, VP UK&I, VMware
Do Lectures Bespoke
The Do Lectures are one of the world’s best ‘non conferences’ and were started 8 years ago just up the coast from us, in Cardigan. TYF’s Andy Middleton is one of the founding partners, and with Do Lectures’ co-founder David Hieatt, has designed a unique experience that takes the very best of the Do Lectures’ format of food, fires and fresh air, and combined it with TYF’s wide and imaginative range of activities to create an event that will be more memorable than any conference or away day meeting that participants have experienced before.
The Do Lectures Bespoke experience runs for two or three days, and can include anything from two or three talks and three or four outdoor experiences with evening music to something much more focused on the work agenda balancing focused time with creative activities and talks.
Accommodation is in 5* tents, the food is fresher than any hotel or conference food you’ve ever tasted and the lectures and workshops take place in or around the ancient barns of the Idea Farm. With so much choice available, the TYF team will work with you to develop the level of physical and mind effort that feels perfectly right for the people attending your event.
Your whole event will be facilitated and compered by Andy Middleton, who will help the learning and experiences make sense for the world of work, and will work with the Do / TYF team to ensure seamless, smiling delivery.
The mix of team / recreation / stretch focus will change according to the challenges and opportunities facing the team, company or business unit that will be taking part in Do Lectures Bespoke. In September 2014, we hosted 40 people from Coull Ltd, a Bristol, London, NY and Santa Barbara-based video marketing business who are readying themselves for a period of significant growth and wanted to bring everyone together to celebrate the present as well as prepare for the future.
The Do Lectures Bespoke event runs for a minimum of 48 hours and can be scheduled for any length beyond this, with a start and finish on the day of the week that suits your organisation best. As an example, for the team from Coull, arriving from both across the UK and the States we started mid afternoon on a Friday and finished after lunch on Sunday, which meant only taking half a day out of the office for their UK team.
You’ll arrive at the Do Lectures’ own Ideas Farm in Cardigan already knowing that something special is going to happen, and the journey ends with a sense of arrival somewhere special. For Coull’s event, their MD wanted to create something new and different, so we created a mix that started with sea swimming, Frisbee and beach football on arrival and an evening of unplugged music on their first night. On the Saturday, the day started with a talk from Andy Middleton on ‘working on purpose’ picking up on the talk he gave at the Do Lectures before the team headed to the nearby coast for a wonderful introduction to coasteering. A beautiful al fresco lunch led into the afternoon’s spread of activities with a three hour session of sea kayaking, slack lining, sourdough bread making, somatics and yoga, spoon carving, charcoal drawing and open canoeing. Returning elated, the group rested for a short while before a sumptuous feast, music, fires, stories and dancing. On the Sunday, we brought the programme to a close with a creative, collaborative project to build a large willow structure that was going to find a permanent home in their offices.
The Do Lectures are life changing in a way that defies description for people who have only played with karts and sat through endless presentations and flip chart scribbles. Jon Wilshire’s notes from the event capture Zach Klein’s “play is like a human superpower” perfectly.
Whatever your outcomes, we’ll tailor the entire programme around them, and are confident that as a minimum, participants’ take-aways will include memories to last a lifetime, a refreshed and different view of the world and stronger deeper relationships with the people they work with.
Col Duthie, who attended from Australia, summed up some of what makes the Do Lectures special, saying “Do infuses a belief that the future can be better, not through hollow hope, but through maintaining the trajectory of action, of do-ing, generated by people who don’t just have ideas, but who by their Do-ing, bring new realities into being”.
